Malatesta Fortress or Rocca del Sasso
The monumental complex of the Rocca Malatestiana was built between the twelfth and sixteenth centuries in a large area created on the highest point of the "stone" of Verucchio, from where you can admire a splendid panorama.
At the end of the 12th century, the Rocca already belonged to the Malatesta family.
Here was born the "Mastin Vecchio" Malatesta da Verucchio, the great Guelph leader who conquered Rimini in 1295 and founded the homonymous Lordship.
The remains of the thirteenth-century fortress with the ancient tower can still be admired today in the fifteenth-century structure commissioned by Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta of 1449.
Inside you can visit the rooms with interesting and original installations, the imposing Sala Magna, (where the city theater was destroyed since the eighteenth century, destroyed during the last world war), and you can go down to the dungeons or climb to the top where you can enjoy an amazing view.
The fortress represents one of the best preserved and representative examples of medieval fortified architecture, which can still be visited today in all its parts
