Here was born Malatesta da Verucchio said the "Centenario", which Dante puts in the Inferno of his Divine Comedy as Mastin Vecchio. Leader and conqueror of lands and cities, then became governor of Rimini where, since 1295, the Lordship develop his power maintaining Verucchio as a strategic garrison and bulwark against adverse dominion of Montefeltro. Also for this reason the Fortress was enlarged in 1449 by the most important representatives of the Malatesta, Sigismondo Pandolfo.
